The Story Behind Safety Engineering Services

Safety Engineering Services was founded to close a clear gap across New Zealand’s manufacturing and industrial sectors: many consultants could advise on safety, but very few could engineer it.

With a background in mechanical engineering and extensive hands-on experience in managing machinery safety, I founded SES to bring engineering precision, practical implementation, and real-world usability to the safety space.

The goal was simple: to deliver safety systems that not only meet standards such as AS/NZS 4024 and ISO 12100, but also perform reliably in daily operation. That means guards that function, safety systems that validate, and people who are trained to respond effectively when it matters.

SES exists to bridge the gap between design intent, compliance, and on-the-ground performance, helping businesses move beyond paperwork and achieve genuine, measurable safety outcomes.

Why Work With SES

  • Engineering-led approach to safety

  • Practical, workable solutions tailored to NZ industry

  • Clear, concise reporting and communication

  • Proven experience with manufacturing, construction, and industrial operations

  • Focus on systems that perform - not just comply

Our Mission

Our mission is straightforward: to prevent harm before it happens.
Behind every machine and process are real people who rely on safety systems that must work under real conditions - not just look compliant on paper.

Too often, risk assessments sit on shelves, training becomes a tick-box exercise, and guarding is bypassed because it slows production. We address these issues by combining engineering discipline with practical, fit-for-purpose solutions that support both safety and productivity.

We design safety systems that work, are maintainable, and improve operational performance.

James Hayter – Principal Safety Engineer

I founded Safety Engineering Services to connect engineering design with practical, operational safety. I hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety Management, and I am a Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE - TÜV Nord).

In addition to engineering qualifications, I hold a Marine Medic certification, which provides advanced first-aid capabilities for high-risk, isolated, and industrial environments.

With over a decade of experience across machine safety, risk management, and emergency response systems, I've delivered safety solutions for leading manufacturing, construction, and industrial organisations throughout New Zealand. My work aligns with AS/NZS 4024, ISO 12100, and WorkSafe NZ guidance, ensuring systems are both compliant and functionally proven in the field.

I’m known for practical problem-solving, clear communication, and a focus on solutions that work for operators, maintenance teams, and management alike.
